MAYOR NUTTER AND THE SCHUYLKILL NAVY ANNOUNCE PHILADELPHIA CLASSIC REGATTA SERIES

22 Regattas Join Together to Create Nation’s First Season-Long Series

PHILADELPHIA (July 6, 2010) – Mayor Michael Nutter and the Schuylkill Navy held a press conference on Wednesday, July 7 to announce the formation of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series, uniting 22 regattas held annually on the Schuylkill River. Designed to further build support for the sport, the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series will run from March through November and includes three of the largest regattas in the Mid-Atlantic region: Stotesbury Cup Regatta with 5,500 competitors; Head of the Schuylkill Regatta with 5,100 competitors; and the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association Championship with 2,500 competitors. The press conference took place in the John S. Firestone room of the Vesper Boat Club on Boathouse Row.

“Philadelphia has embraced and supported the sport of rowing for decades,” said Mayor Nutter. “This year alone, more than 40,000 athletes will compete in our 22 races on the Schuylkill, bringing thousands more to cheer on some of the best rowers in the world.”

The first organized regatta on the Schuylkill took place November 12, 1835, eight years before rowing started at Harvard University. The first national regatta was held in Philadelphia on October 9, 1873. In the 1800s, the Schuylkill River was called the National Race Course. Two of the nation’s oldest regattas, the Schuylkill Navy Regatta, which dates to before 1860, and the Independence Day Regatta, which started in 1880, are held annually on the Schuylkill.

Today, Philadelphia continues its proud tradition as the Schuylkill River holds more regattas each year than any other river in the country, and includes the second largest regatta in the country, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, which is also the nation’s oldest and largest high school rowing event.

“We are thrilled to bring all of these regattas together to form an outstanding season-long series,” said Clete Graham, chair of the Philadelphia Classic Regatta Series advisory committee and past commodore of Schuylkill Navy. “This series presents a unique opportunity for area companies to put their name on not just one, but 22 races over 9 months, reaching 50,000 spectators and fans.”

Sponsorship and partnership opportunities are now available for the 2011 season, including a title sponsor spot with benefits including on-site signage, banner signage in Center City and Fairmount Park, logo visibility, recognition in programs, special client entertainment opportunities and Web site recognition.
