Our first event was a huge success on Mother's Day, 2002. 121 rowers and paddlers raised enough monies so that we were able to present a check for $35,000.00 to the Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Our donation was enough to fund a local program to provide mammograms and breast cancer counseling to women who otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford it.
Rather than compete with the crowds on Mother's Day again in 2003, we decided to hold our next event on Sunday, October 5, 2003. With our row-a-thon being held in October, we will be able to help kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness month. The event will be held the day after the Dragon Boat festival; also, no other regattas are scheduled to be held on the Schuylkill on October 5.
We will be having monthly meetings which will be held at Bachelors Barge Club, #6 Boathouse Row, starting next Monday, May 19. Following is a list of meeting dates. I'm sure the meetings will become more frequent once we get into September. We need volunteers, ideas, and committee chairpersons for a kick-off party as well as the main event. So, please attend to help make the Philadelphia Row for the Cure more of a success in 2003!
