Schuylkill Navy Banquet

We invite you to join us in celebrating the 2006 rowing season at the Schuylkill Navy Banquet on Saturday, March 24, 2007 at Lloyd Hall.

We have lots of awards and presentations planned:

The highlight of the evening is the Coach of the Year Award. This year’s recipient is Stan Bergman, who stepped down after 22 years as the head coach at Penn. For more on Stan’s accomplishments…

Introducing Stan will be USRowing head mens coach Mike Teti. Mike is always an interesting speaker.

Ted Nash is juggling his schedule right now, but hopes to be in town on March 24. If he is, he’ll also share some memories and stories about Stan with us.

We are pleased to announce the selection of Renee Hykel as our first “Athlete of the Year”. Renee grew up in Haverford, started rowing at St. Joe’s University, and has been on the US national team for the past 4 years. In 2006 she won the light single at the Head of the Charles and at the USRowing speed orders. With Julie Nichols, she rowed the light 2x at the 2005 and 2006 World Rowing Championships, winning the silver medal in 2005.

We will present mileage certificates to all individuals who rowed more than 1,000 miles in 2006. Here's a list of names and miles we've received so far. If you are eligible for a certificate, be sure to let your club’s Schuylkill Navy delegate know.

We'll recognize local members of the 2006 US national team:

We’re planning a special recognition of Karin Tetlow, age 71, and Judy Kaplow, 68, for their performance at the Hutchinson Cup. Both women rowed three 3 mile head races and a 250 meter dash, all in the same day.

We’ve selected Malta’s Fred Duling and Rick Stehlik as our first ever Masters Athletes of the Year. The duo won gold medals in both the D (age 50 to 54) and E (55 to 59) doubles races at the FISA World Masters Regatta in Princeton this summer. Fred and Rick won bronze medals at the World Rowing Championships in 1977. 30 years later still going strong. Oh, and Rick had both hips replaced two years ago.

The food is always great at our banquet and Chef’s Market will be back again this year to cater. The theme will be “A Taste of Italy”. We’ll have an antipasto bar with Italian cheeses, grilled vegetables, cold cuts, cold marinated seafood, marinated mozzarella balls, bruschetta and more. The buffet table will include germilli pescatore with shrimp, scallops and mussels, penne pasta with artichokes, spinach and mushrooms in creamy pesto sauce, boneless slow roasted rosemary pork loin, and assorted sautéed mixed greens, escarole, broccoli rabe and green beans. And dessert!

Reservations are required. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, March 14. Download and print the reservation form and mail it with your check to the address on the form.

Cocktails at 6:00 pm, dinner at 7:00 pm, Lloyd Hall.
