ODU/Richmond/Towson @ William & Mary

22 March 1997

Old Dominion University, University of Richmond, Towson State University at the College of William and Mary

1000 meters (+/-), on College Creek, Williamsburg Virginia

We had flat water all week until this morning, when a huge wind picked up and made our course on the James River completely unrowable. Instead, the crews raced on a make-shift roughly-1000-meter course on College Creek. The wind swung around as racing progressed, leaving us with a strong cross-wind. By the end of the races, College Creek was choppy and the proper course on the James River was calm (figures, doesn't it).

Most crews handled the conditions well. The exceptions were the Richmond and ODU Novice Women, who boated last as conditions were deteriorating and got into trouble with the conditions shortly into the warm-up and returned to the dock without racing. On this course and under these conditions, we limited racing to two boats abreast (except for one division of varsity women). Most events were therefore split into divisions; Men's Varsity was rowed in heats andfinals.
