The 1997 rowing season began on the Schuylkill yesterday for the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association with the first in a series of Manny Flick Cup races.

It was a short regatta of eight events with no out-of-town entries, an indication that crews were not prepared for an earlier opening than usual.

The major event, the varsity eight, was won by coach Dave Krmpotich's Monsignor Bonner crew in a repeat of last year's opening triumph. The Bonner oarsmen won by 1_3/4 lengths over St. Joseph's Prep A, with St. Joseph's Prep B third, LaSalle fourth, and Father Judge fifth.

Bonner's time for the 1,500-meter course was fast -- 4 minutes, 11.30 seconds -- with the help of a tailwind.
