Princeton rowers slip past Penn
Class of '89 Plate

Princeton outrowed Penn by three-quarters of a boat length to win the Wood Hammond Cup in the annual men's varsity eight lightweight race yesterday in cold, fierce wind on a choppy Schuylkill. Princeton led for most of the course and warded off a closing rush by the Quakers. The Tigers covered the 2,000 meters in 5 minutes, 53.6 seconds. Penn finished in 5:56.4. The victory completed a four-race sweep for Princeton.

Varsity eight: 1, Princeton, 5:53.6; 2, Penn, 5:56.4.

Junior varsity eight: 1, Princeton, 6:08.8; 2, Penn, 6:20.6.

First freshman eight: 1, Princeton, 6:09.2; 2, Penn, 6:27.3.

Second freshman eight: 1, Princeton, 6:34.9; 2, Penn, 6:46.2



Class of '89 Plate

Rutgers oarswomen prevailed over Cornell and Penn in winning the Class of '89 Plate in varsity eight competition. Rutgers led throughout and had a margin of 1 1/2 lengths at the finish.

Varsity eight: 1, Rutgers, 6:44.9; 2, Penn, 6:50.4; 3, Cornell, 6:50.7.

Junior varsity eight: 1, Rutgers, 6:49.4; 2, Cornell, 6:54.5; 3, Penn, 7:16.1.

First novice eight: 1, Cornell, 6:53.4; 2, Penn, 6:56.2; 3, Rutgers, 7:01.2.

Second novice eight: 1, Cornell, 7:06.5; 2 Penn, 7:29.1; 3, Rutgers, 7:34.2.

Third varsity four: 1, Rutgers, 7:45.5; 2, Cornell, 7:56; 3, Rutgers, 8:02; 4, Cornell novice, 5:20.7.

Murphy Cup

 The Temple University men's varsity eight powered to victory for the Murphy Cup in the annual college regatta staged by the Owls on the Schuylkill. Coach Gavin White's oarsmen raced the 2,000 meters in rough conditions in 5:49, finishing in front of Drexel by 2 1/2 lengths. Drexel was timed in 5:59.2, and was followed home by Rochester, George Mason and Villanova.

Men's varsity eight: 1, Temple; 2, Drexel; 3, Rochester; 4, George Mason; 5, Villanova. 5:49.

Women's varsity eight: 1, Temple; 2 Villanova; 3, Delaware; 4, Mercyhurst; 5, Drexel; 6, George Mason. 6:44.1.

Men's varsity lightweight eight: 1, St. Joseph's; 2, Villanova; 3, Temple. 5:06.6.

Women's varsity lightweight eight: 1, Villanova; 2, LaSalle; 3, Mercyhurst. 6:05.2.

Men's second varsity eight: 1, Tempple; 2, Drexel; 3, Rochester. 6:15.3;

Men's novice eight: 1, St. Joseph's; 2, Drexel; 3, Villanova. 6:06.3.;
