Explore the Schuylkill River

Updated December 30, 2007

Schuylkill Banks - It all starts on Schuylkill Bank, an eight mile stretch of distinctly urban riverfront in Philadelphia. As Philadelphia’s newest riverfront destination, Schuylkill Banks, is destined to change lives for the better. Its graceful banks are home to greenways, parks, docks, the nation’s leading educational institutions, award-winning residential developments and active industrial sites that more and more are making way for livable spaces.

Welcome to the Schuylkill River Heritage Corridor - With the 128-mile Schuylkill River as its spine, our Schuylkill River Valley National Heritage Area is alive with a remarkable diversity of historic, recreational and cultural attractions. Along "the Revolutionary River," visitors can shadow the birth of our nation from the cobblestone streets and fabled landmarks of old Philadelphia to the huts and hollows of Valley Forge. Upstream you'll find a wealth of historic places, quaint river towns, abundant parks and access points to the river and trails, and year-round festivals and activities.

Philadelphia's Fairmount Water Works, 1800-1860 - The Fairmount Dam, built to divert the flow of the river for the Waterworks, created the basin on which we row. Without the Waterworks there would be no dam, and without the dam there would be no rowing on the Schuylkill. This site is a great historical sketch of the Waterworks.
